Grains opened the week weaker, led by another sharp decline in MATIF wheat as fund liquidation continued. Russia said it was discussing safe-shipping proposals with Turkey and others but saw no prospect of reviving the previous grain deal. Russian 12.5% wheat from Baltic ports fell to $264/t FOB for December shipment. US soybean inspections reached a marketing-year high of 2.476 mmt, including 1.652 mmt to China, while corn inspections dropped to 625k tonnes and wheat to 184k tonnes. JRC MARS also cut its 2026 EU grain-maize yield forecast to 6.42 t/ha, 9% below the five-year average.
US wheat and corn extended their decline to levels last seen in July, while MATIF performed better as a weaker euro and firmer European cash demand provided support. Lower prices also brought importers back, with Jordan buying 60k tonnes of wheat at $313.95/t C&F and Tunisia tendering for wheat and feed barley. EU wheat exports reached 9.21 mmt by October 25, slightly above last year, while CM Navigator line-ups indicated actual flows above 13 mmt. EUR/USD remained near recent lows, supporting European wheat competitiveness in dollar terms.
Wheat fell again after Russia authorised grain vessels to leave Sea of Azov ports for the first time since July 10, with Kerch Strait permits valid through November 15. Russia also began loading its first grain export cargo from Murmansk, with shipping data indicating around 28k tonnes of wheat could sail to Morocco. Tunisia purchased 100k tonnes of soft wheat and 100k tonnes of feed barley, while Jordan bought another 60k tonnes of feed barley. MATIF non-commercial participants reduced their net long by another 42.1k contracts to 111.2k.
Chicago wheat recovered from four-month lows after stronger US export sales and reported Chinese interest triggered short covering. US wheat sales reached 849.8k tonnes, a marketing-year high and well above market expectations. COFCO also requested offers for US SRW wheat, although no Chinese purchase had been confirmed. Russian wheat exports were expected to exceed 3 mmt in November as exporters increasingly used Baltic and other alternative routes. Argentina’s wheat harvest reached 6.7%, while new-crop offers fell to around $233/t FOB for December.

Markets ended the week quietly, with MATIF wheat outperforming Chicago while corn moved lower. Managed money cut its corn net long by 90.3k contracts to just 55.9k, while the SRW wheat net short increased by 23.7k to 74.9k. The European Commission reduced its 2026/27 EU maize production estimate to 47.0 mmt from 48.3 mmt, while soft wheat production was trimmed to 123.7 mmt. French soft wheat sowing reached 62%, up 17 percentage points on the week. Turkey also said it was increasing efforts to restore Russian and Ukrainian grain shipments through the Black Sea.
